Microsoft will soon launch the new Windows 8.1 Preview at the BUILD developer conference, but users need to think twice before installing this beta version.

According to a report published by ZDNet, consumers who install the preview version and then want to upgrade to the RTM release will have all their installed apps automatically deleted. Their data and accounts will be preserved, but Metro and desktop apps will be entirely removed.

A Microsoft spokesperson has also revealed that the upcoming Windows 8.1 upgrade will be similar to what we’ve seen in Windows 7, at least when it comes to user settings, data, and apps.

More information, however, will be provided later this month, as the Windows 8.1 Preview will be unveiled on June 26. As far as the stable build is concerned, sources familiar with the matter have hinted that it could see daylight in August or September.
