Tweeted minutes ago by Musclenerd, news of an updated Redsn0w should be more than welcomed by the iOS community looking to jailbreak the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

The update mostly targets iPhone 3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband. Although Redsn0w currently provides only a ‘tethered’ jailbreak of the latest iOS, some 3GS phones (with an older botrom) can support an ‘untethered’ hack.

Musclenerd wrote: “redsn0w 0.9.9b6 fixes Location Services issue for 3GS w/06.15 … re-run it over existing iOS5 JB.” In usual manner, the hacker directs users to the Dev-Team blog, where more details are provided.

“We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers,” reads the latest blog entry signed iPhone Dev-Team.

“For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup).”

The visual fix has to do with the countdown displayed when entering DFU mode, says the Team.

“It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5,” the hacker group continues to explain.

“Just choose ‘Jailbreak’ again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked),” reads the instructional post.

“If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken),” the Team adds.

Ultrasn0w, the unlock tool accessible through Cydia only after jailbreaking the iPhone, is also updated with support for iOS 5.

The tool remains backwards compatible, meaning users should be able to use it no matter what firmware they have. Read more here.
