Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise is currently filming in Italy, for "Mission: Impossible 3", accompanied by his future wife, Katie Holmes. In order to complete some scenes, the producers rented for six days a sumptuous Bourbon palace that once housed the kings of Naples.
The palace was created in the mid 18th century to rival Versailles in France and the Palacio Real in Madrid. The architect was Luigi Vanvitelli, the son of a Dutch artist, Van Witel, who lived in Rome.
Palazzo Reale is exceptional in that it brings together a sumptuous palace and its park and gardens, as well as natural woodland, hunting lodges, and an industrial establishment for the production of silk.
The palace in Caserta was built for the Bourbon King Charles III in 1752. The exterior was completed in 1774, the interior 100 years later. The facade is 810 ft. long and conceals 1,200 rooms, 1,790 windows and 94 staircases. An aqueduct brought water to the palace and gardens.
George Lucas also used this locations to shoot some scenes for Star Wars Episode II in 2000.
Earlier this week, Tom shot a motorboat chase on the Tiber river in Rome. According to a local newspaper, the company which runs ferries on the Tiber river, all boats that were usually shipping locals, tourists and other traffic along the river, were barred from their waterway for the day, due to the M:I 3 shootings.
The movie will be released on May 5, 2006.
