Microsoft has made available for download Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 on March 12, 2009. In addition to the Dynamics CRM 4.0 Server, the update package is also designed to integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Microsoft Office Outlook, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 E-mail Router. Microsoft informed that Update Rollup 1 and 2 were not prerequisites for deployment of Update Rollup 3, as the latter includes all the fixes that were brought to the table by its precursors.

“The Update Rollup 3 client can be deployed before the server is upgraded to Update Rollup 3. Update Rollup 3 can be uninstalled. Incorporated installer feedback on Update Rollup 2, so now we don’t over write your modified web.config file,” informed Matt Brown, program manager lead for the Microsoft CRM Sustained Engineering (SE) team.

Back at the end of January 2009, Brown revealed that Microsoft was looking to release Update Rollup 3 in mid-March 2009, and in this regard, the Redmond company managed to deliver on that promise. Also in January the software giant wrapped up its Update Rollup servicing model for Microsoft CRM 4.0, with a focus on delivering more frequent refreshes. Moving onward, the software giant plans to release additional Update Rollups on an 8-week cycle; however, it indicated that quality concerns could be sufficient to postpone a certain refresh.

Brown also explained “how to avoid a required reboot when installing a patch for the CRM Outlook Client: before starting the update process, go to Options from the CRM menu. On the “General” tab, uncheck the bottom checkbox that says “Always run the…Host process” and then click “Ok” button. When manually checking for updates, go ahead and close Outlook by choosing Exit from Outlook’s File menu. This will close Outlook along with the CRM add-in and the Hoster process. Now check for updates by selecting All Programs from the Start menu. Then select Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and choose Update. Restart Outlook after the patch is installed.”
