Following Gowalla’s acquisition by Facebook, it appears that the latter plans to add a dedicated “Places” application to its Android app, or at least that’s what the recently leaked screenshots of the version 1.8 release candidate suggest.

The guys over at Engadget noticed that the upcoming version of Facebook features a standalone “Nearby” icon, which might indicate that the developer plans to make it available as a separate application.

The screenshots leaked courtesy to the folks at Engadget also show that the developer rehauled the application’s user interface layout and gave it a fresh look.

However, the Facebook for Android application is still in the works, so nothing is final. No word on the application’s availability on the Android Market yet, but it may be announced within the next few weeks.
