A new version of this great game has been released

Unvanquished, a free, open source first-person shooter combining real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has received a new update, but this time it's a smaller one.

Unvanquished is still in the Alpha stages and it looks like it's going to remain that way for quite a while. Even so, the developers are making great strides and the updates seem to arrive now in a much quicker pace.

The game is actually a fork of Tremulous, an older free multiplayer FPS that is no longer being developed and that abruptly disappeared. The guys who are doing Unvanquished have picked up the slack (and the code) and are trying to make something different from what has been tried before.

One of the biggest changes in the previous update was the introduction of NaCl binaries. This is only in the server code, but the client side should also get these improvements as well.

“Two of our maps have received updates. Viech has made a few adjustments to Parpax – some which you'll notice quite quickly are around the humans' front entrance – and one old Tremulous map has become an Unvanquished map. Supertanker has done a retexturing job on Spacetracks (and there may be one or two layout tweaks too). The drill and the jetpack have seen a few fixes – there were a few problems in the initial model exports. Little things like sharp seams being lost.”

“We now use header compilation, which provides a significant reduction in build time. There's been a lot of small fixes and some clean-up of dead code. Compatibility should be improved a bit too – unnecessary checks for unused GL extensions have been removed,” said the deves in their regular update.

Also, gameplay-wise, turrets now cost 10 build points and have increased health (250hp), but are susceptible to dretch damage. This should level up the playing field a little. The firepattern of the turrets is again continuous, which means that they will continue to fire on the enemy as long as there is something in their sight.

The alien health regeneration has been modified again. Users will notice that the health now regenerates faster while inside the base, and much slower in the field.

More details about this amazingly-looking game can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and bugs are bound to be encountered. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 28 right now from Softpedia.
