14 DAY TRIAL // Unvanquished, a free, open source first-person shooter combining real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has managed to get to version Alpha 36, registering great progress towards a stable release.
Unvanquished is still under development and there is no reason to believe that it will reach a stable stage too soon, but the truth is that the game has made a huge step forward. The developers have continually implemented new features and they seem to be getting to points where they seem to be done with some aspect of the gameplay.
The game started its life as a fork of Tremulous, which was another free and open source multiplayer game for the Linux platform. The development stopped a few years back, but now Unvanquished is here to take its place. It features a rather different gameplay, but Unvanquished promises to be one of the last free FPS of its kind.
Unvanquished Alpha 36 is a major upgrade
The developers have explained that they finished the work with all the human building models, which is definitely something to celebrate. They have also updated some of the maps and the gameplay itself has been revamped.
"We have two new models, two mapping updates, gameplay progress, and plenty going on behind the scenes. First, let’s go over the new models. We’ve got the repeater, which means that of this release, all human building models are finished! As for the alien team, we have the spiker, a brand new defense structure that acts as a living proximity mine. For our maps, Antares has received a significant overhaul with a new detail pass, and Forlorn has seen another large graphical update, with both maps heading towards a stable state soon," wrote the developers on the website.
