Unvanquished, a free, open source first-person shooter combining real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has been updated yet again and this is one of the biggest releases so far.

Many Linux users might have heard of a game called Tremulous, which was quite famous a while back. The development for that multiplayer game stopped and all the code was forked into another project called Unvanquished.

A few years ago, FPS multiplayer games were all over the place. Most of them were free and fast-paced, reminiscent of the Quake era. They slowly vanished and now only a few remain. Unvanquished is one of them, and from what we've seen so far, it's here to stay.

What's new in Unvanquished

The developers usually release one major update every month and they don't seem to stray too far from this schedule. This latest update is quite consistent and seems to be much bigger than the previous ones.

"There were gameplay changes included from feedback collected during our Sunday development games as well. Knockback has been removed from most sources of damage, except for obvious ones like explosions. Build points are stored in the appropriate resource structure, and you will lose some when the enemy destroys them. The healing range for aliens in proximity to each other has been increased, and you will heal faster when near three or more aliens."

"Beacons now use smaller icons for structures, and building beacons will no longer pool up on edges of the screen. Also, beacons for enemy structures will remain in place until their death or removal are confirmed by a teammate, meaning that you can no longer cheat by knowing immediately when a structure is gone. Buildings will also no longer heal when unpowered," reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, the alien teammate heal range has been increased, the build point and mining-related functions have been moved, RGS will now store a fraction of the team's build point pool, leftover debug output has been removed, the current mine rate and the stored build points have been added to buildable status displays, the momentum reward size for killing players has been fixed, and librocket has been updated.

More details about this amazingly-looking game can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and bugs are bound to be encountered. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 31 right now from Softpedia.
