The Unvanquished development team had the pleasure of announcing today, April 6, the immediate availability for download of a new Alpha build of their FPS (First-person shooter) game for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Unvanquished Alpha 38 brings plenty of new features, among which we can mention a new building effect for human structures (you can watch it in action at the end of the article), auto-softening for all sprites in the renderer, which means that all particles can now benefit from the soft particle feature, as well as enhancements to vertex deforms and shaders.

Some very old and non-functional renderer code has been removed from this new Alpha version of the Unvanquished FPS as well. In addition, the libRocket library has been updated, and numerous bugs reported by users from the previous release have been squashed, including the issue with getting the list of servers on a Microsoft Windows operating system.

“Spring is in the air, warm winds are blowing in, and a new release of Unvanquished has arrived. What’s new in this release? Plenty!” was stated in the today’s announcement of Unvanquished Alpha 38, which includes the entire list of commits that have been implemented, so you should check it if you want to know exactly what was changed.

The gameplay of Unvanquished FPS has been improved as well

Unvanquished’s gameplay has been improved too in Alpha 38, as the development team reworked the inherited radar system by replacing the old 2D sprites with an in-house built beacon system. Moreover, various objects of interest are now marked with beacons, and useful information will be provided to players when hovering the crosshairs over the beacon.

Last but not least, the spiker trigger conditions has received several improvements, the dretches have been modified to no longer attack turrets, and momentum gains will now depend on the total number of players present in the game.
