Open source first-person shooters are not exactly a dime a dozen these days, but Unvanquished is on the right track and the developers are providing a gaming experience that can rival commercial alternatives.

This game is a free, open source first-person shooter combined with real-time strategy elements. It has a sci-fi plot and it's updated on a constant basis. Each new release brings more and more features, and the current version is no different.

If you are an older Linux user, you might have heard of a game called Tremulous, which was also a free first-person shooter, but the development for that particular title stopped a few years back. The makers of Unvanquished picked up the source code and expanded it a lot.

Lots of fixes for the latest Unvanquished release

The developers launch a big update each month and they haven't missed a beat until now. They have marked their title as Alpha and that means that it's still pretty far away from a complete game, but after so many updates, the Beta version must be getting very close.

"In this release, we've at last added the new model for our rifle replacement, the SMG. Compared to its prior incarnation, the weapon has a faster firing rate and more spread, making the default human weapon more useful at shorter ranges. Be sure to try it out and shoot up some aliens with it! You'll have some new targets, as well. The mantis has received animation fixes and a texture update, while the trapper has been completely reanimated, making it much more lively compared to the older, more rigid animations."

"We've merged in our latest batch of renderer fixes, optimizations, and improvements. Multiple bugs were fixed this release, as well. IQM structures (such as the reactor, armory, and drill) are no longer culled when you move your view past them. Circle menu colors for both teams have been made more consistent and hopefully less confusing," note the developers on the official website.

Unlike the previous Alpha in the series, this new version seems to be a little more about various fixes and less about new features. Some important modifications have been made to the structure of the game, and now only smaller things remain to be corrected. Unvanquished Alpha 32 also comes with some balancing changes and users might notice some of them.

More details about this amazingly-looking game can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and bugs are bound to be encountered. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 32 right now from Softpedia.
