A new update has been released for this FPS

Unvanquished, a free, open-source first-person shooter that combines real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has been updated once more, and it looks like the developers have made some important progress.

Unvanquished is still in the Alpha stages, and it feels like an eternity since it was first announced, but the team has made some real progress. They are already focusing much more on fixing problems and less on implementing new features, which is now obvious if we take a look at the changelog.

There are very few open source first-person shooters still around, and Unvanquished is probably the last of its kind. There was a time when the competition was fierce and picking an FPS to play was difficult, but things have changed considerably. In any case, it's nice to see that the Unvanquished team still has the power to go on, and maybe we'll see the launch of the final version by the end of the year.

Unvanquished Alpha 40 bring improvements for graphics

The engine used in Unvanquished is still being improved, and it looks like the developers want to make some important changes to it. They have already added a few new graphical options and it's unlikely they will stop now.

"As for this release, we have a new renderer effect, a new model, and the usual assortment of bug fixes and code cleanup. The new effect is screen-space ambient occlusion, or SSAO for short. It’s a bit resource-intensive at the moment so it’s off by default, but you can enable it in the options menu. The effect provides enhanced shading for every model, and even provides a subtle effect to maps as well. As for the new model, it’s the barricade, visible on the release shot next to the overmind. Have fun shooting it," reads the changelog.

More details about this can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and bugs are bound to be encountered. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 40 right now from Softpedia.
