Pod2g obtains A5 device, plans weekend-long hacking session

iOS hackers are gearing up to deliver new hacks that will enable the jailbreak community to enjoy cool new features, including Siri on older-generation devices, and perhaps even an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 4S.

Pod2g has just tweeted that he has obtained an iPhone 4S unit and plans to hack the heck out of it over this next weekend.

“Hi! I have a 4S in hand (thx). Will work hard on it this weekend,” he wrote on Twitter.

It is unclear what Pod2g is referring to when he says he’s going to work hard on the iPhone 4S in the next couple of days.

The hacker is known to be actively developing an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. In fact, his hack is finished and he’s only ironing out the bugs now.

A public release isn’t too far off, but his exploit can only compromise devices that use the A4 chip and lower - iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation players.

The iPhone 4S, however, is an A5-based device. The iPad 2 also uses the newer SoC (system on a chip), but these two gadgets can’t be jailbroken for now. Untethered jailbreaks are also out of the question.

Or are they? Up until now, the only thing standing between Pod2g and an iPhone 4S jailbreak was, in fact, the lack of an iPhone 4S to work on. Now that he's obtained one, jailbreakers should hope for some great news this weekend, or early next week.

It is also known that Apple’s tweaked iOS 5.0.1 targeting iPhone 4S handsets features decrypted ramdisks.

According to the iPhone Dev Team’s Musclenerd (another prominent name in the iOS hacker community), this revised IPSW makes it possible to extract the necessary files to port Siri to an iPhone 4 while avoiding infringement on Apple’s copyright.

We expect some updates on this too from the aforementioned hackers.
