Thanks to the work of hackers pod2g and posixninja, Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4 users can untether their existing iOS 4.2.7 jailbreak by simply downloading a free package from Cydia, the App Store alternative for jailbreakers.

Reportedly, CDMA iPhone 4 users can employ ‘Verizon Untether for 4.2.7’, bundled and distributed by iHsn0w on Jay Freeman’s Cydia.

Those running a tethered jailbreak on their iPhones will always need to connect their device to the jailbreak computer when a reboot is needed (or when the battery drains).

Now, all the user is required to eliminate this hassle is to locate and install the Verizon Untether package from Cydia over their currently tethered jailbreak. According to OS X Daily, the exact steps are:

1. Launch Cydia and add the following rep: http://cydia.pushfix.info 2. Search for “Verizon Untether 4.2.7″ and install the package 3. Reboot your iPhone

The source of this tidbit reminds CDMA iPhone 4 owners that jailbreaking a CDMA handset requires downloading an iOS 4.2.7 IPSW from Apple - the only compatible firmware bundle for that iPhone model.

It may be worth noting that Apple is preparing yet another software update to fix a few recently discovered issues, including a location tracking bug.

iOS 4.3.3 (the most likely designation of the update) will arrive this month, in accordance with Apple’s promise in April to roll out the software in ‘weeks.’

The free iOS software update will reduce the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone, as well as cease backing up this cache.

Among other tweaks and enhancements likely making their way into the update, iOS 4.3.3 will also delete its cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
