14 DAY TRIAL // Untangle, maker of the open-source firewall Linux distro with the same name, has announced the release of Untangle 7.4. The latest update is mostly a bug-fixing release with the focus being on polishing the rough edges.
With Untangle 7.4, the product line up also got a revamp to make it easier to understand. Untangle 7.4 now comes in three flavors, each with a different target audience.
“This release has focused sharply on quality. Untangle 7.4 brings additional improvements throughout the Untangle suite of applications, and the Untangle platform itself,” the official announcement read.
“As our business has grown over the last two years, our offering has become increasingly complex,“ Mark Floisand, chief operating officer at Untangle, said.
“We have trebled our paying customer base in 18 months, and with that came more product packages and price points. With this release, we wanted to regain some of the simplicity inherent in our brand,” he explained.
Highlights of Untangle 7.4:
· Updated kernel with many bugfixes including HPET-fix; · Updated NIC drivers for some modern cards; · Rename packages to lite/standard/premium; · Added a warning for port 443 port forwards; · Made switching from bridge to static more intuitive; · Added some community skins; · Additional error checking on app installation; · Video-safe-mode is now the default.
There are several application specific fixes as well. With Untangle 7.4, the goal was on squashing any of the existing bugs and generally bring the release to higher level of quality.
Untangle 7.4 is also the first version to be made available under the new product lineup. The first option is the Untangle Lite Package, called the Open Source Package so far, and is available for free. It only bundles open-source software and comes with no support from the company.
Those that need a bit more control and someone to turn to in certain situations, can opt for the Untangle Standard Package which adds several features and capabilities and comes with live tech-support available. Finally, Untangle Premium Package adds even more packages to offer a complete solution.
