Epic Games has clarified its recent statements concerning the Unreal Engine 4, saying that, while the technology won't support the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, developers who license it can modify the engine to run on these current-generation platforms.

Epic Games is preparing for the release of the next generation of consoles, and it's already made plenty of statements and released lots of videos with the new technology.

Yesterday we heard from Epic's Mark Rein that the Unreal Engine 4 won't support current-gen devices like the Wii U, PS3, or Xbox 360.

Now, Rein clarified his statement to Engadget and revealed that, if developers want to make the technology work on the aforementioned consoles, they're free to do so.

"If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they want to ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen," Rein said.

Epic will only include support for PC, PlayStation 4 and the oft-rumored Xbox 720 in Unreal Engine 4, however.
