Epic Games and its Salt Lake City-based development studio, ChAIR Entertainment, have recently revealed a new action-RPG sword fighting adventure game for iOS devices called “Infinity Blade.”

Set to launch for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch this holiday season, the title was originally introduced as “Project Sword” during a special event in September 2010, in San Francisco.

ChAIR new game is touted as “ground-breaking”, thanks to the power of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 upon which the game was built.

As shown in the recently released trailer (embedded below), Infinity Blade boasts console-grade graphics on Apple’s “world-class gaming platforms,” as the development studio puts it.

“Taking handheld gaming to new heights, the graphically intense ‘Infinity Blade’ features adrenaline-fueled sword battles and epic boss fights set in the realm of a fully 3D castle,” Epic Games states.

According to the publisher, Infinity Blade features a robust single-player mode with an intuitive interface and simple touch controls. This enables both hardcore and casual gamers to appreciate the game for what it delivers, Epic Games believes.

“As play progresses, players gain experience, build stats and earn more powerful items to prepare their knight for the final encounter with the game’s nemesis, the God-King,” the publisher explains.

Epic also confirmed that, following the game’s release, additional content will be released free of charge via planned updates.

These will include a fully integrated multiplayer mode, which enables players to find friends and other challengers to battle online via Game Center, Apple’s social network for iPhone and iPod touch gamers. The service is on its way to iPad users as well, via the forthcoming iOS 4.2 update.

“More than one million people have been introduced to the world of ‘Infinity Blade’ through our free app, ‘Epic Citadel,’ and soon everyone will be able to play our first fully featured game for iOS devices,” said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games.

Epic Citadel is an application that showcases the technical capabilities of the award-winning Unreal Engine 3 on iOS devices.

In Epic Citadel (iTunes link), players navigate a fictional castle realm using simple and intuitive touch controls. The app’s purpose is basically just exploring the world and enjoying the crisp visuals.

“With ‘Infinity Blade,’ ChAIR has created an amazing looking, incredibly fun game that really demonstrates the potential of triple-A mobile gaming,” Capps added.

Epic said that the pricing and exact release date for Infinity Blade will soon be confirmed.
