This past Tuesday, an unmade and really dirty bed sold for a whopping $3.77 million (€2.75 million) at an auction organized by Christie’s in London, UK.

The bed, a photo of which is available above, comprises dirty sheets and all sorts of stuff few would ever expect to find piled up in the same place.

According to Time, undies that are in dire need of a spin in the washing machine, together with empty liquor bottles and even pregnancy tests are all scattered either on or around this bed.

Most people would faint if they were to come home one day and find their bed in this deplorable condition. However, it looks like messiness can be OK, just as long as it's all about art.

Thus, the unmade and dirty bed is the work of artist Tracey Emin. The installation documents her horrible breakup with one of her former boyfriends and is one of the most famous pieces of modern art.

Tracey Emin created this installation, titled My Bed, back in 1998. According to the artist, this unmade bed need be regarded as a self-portrait achieved through objects.

“It was about the breakup of a relationship with someone I was really in love with. And it was also about my own sort of desperation; it was very romantic in lots of ways,” Tracey Emin said, as cited by The Guardian.

“It's very romantic, what I was feeling was the saddest kind of romanticism that anybody could ever imagine. I could have written a broken-hearted love story at the same time, and I did, with the bed,” she added.
