Universal is working overtime to convince Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass to return to the Jason Bourne franchise

A couple of months ago, there was a report that Matt Damon was thinking about returning as the dark and forgetful spy Jason Bourne. This was of course good news for anyone who saw the latest Jason Bourne movie with Jeremy Renner and could compare it to the originals.

The only condition Damon had given for his return was that director Paul Greengrass also return behind the lens. Greengrass directed the last two movies in the Bourne trilogy and Damon got along exceptionally well with him.

Now Deadline is confirming that the right people were listening and efforts are being made to get the third Damon/Greengrass movie into production. Universal Pictures has already had talks with both the actor and the director and the early signs are good. The studio is keen to get things moving as it wants to get the movie out in theaters by July 2016.

This comes as a bit of a shock because Greengrass was previously quoted as saying that he would not return to the franchise once Bourne regained his memory because there was no place for him to go creatively. But the studio must have done something right to convince him otherwise.

While all of this is going on, there is also a “Bourne Legacy” sequel in the works staring Jeremy Renner, this time directed by Justin Lin instead of Tony Gilroy. The reported timeline is going to set this movie after the first sequel.
