The Univention Corporate Server (UCS) enterprise-ready Linux server distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system has been updated today, February 11, to version 4.0-1, a minor release that includes an updated Debian base and various tweaks.

According to the changelog, the most important feature of Univention Corporate Server 4.0-1 is the integration of the Debian 7.8 (Wheezy) update, which brings a wide variety of bugfixes, security patches, and overall system improvements, with the ultimate goal of making UCS more stable and reliable.

The "Free for personal Use" edition of Univention Corporate Server has been extended from 5 users and 5 clients to 50 users and 50 clients. This is quite great for small- and medium-sized businesses who don’t have the money to buy a full UCS license or don’t need one because they have under 50 users/clients.

The system installation has been greatly simplified in Univention Corporate Server 4.0-1, allowing users to effortlessly deploy the server on multiple computers simultaneously, saving them a lot of precious time. In the same news, the setup of cloud instances has been improvements when using UCS in appliance mode.

Active Directory domain joining has been simplified

Joining Active Directory domains is now a simple task that even a 10-year-old can do. The distribution lets users use Microsoft Sharepoint services, as well as print documents over a Windows network, thanks you various Samba improvements and bugfixes.

Last but not least, the Univention Management Console component of Univention Corporate Server received a great number of enhancements and bugfixes in version 4.0-1, especially in its design, making it more usable.

While the DVD ISO image has been updated for 64-bit systems, the physical DVD has been updated for both 32 and 64-bit platforms. Moreover, the virtual machines have also been updated to support Oracle VirtualBox, VMWare ESX, and VMware Player virtualization software.
