Unity Linux 2010.02 has been released. It's the second snapshot of the 2010 build and comes with a number of updated packages from the previous two releases as well as improvements to the "mklivecd" and "unity-installer" tools.

"The developers at the Unity Linux project are proud to announce a brand new snapshot of the 2010 release. The 2010.2 release provides many updates to core packages, much more stability, refinements to the core tools of the project like mklivecd and unity-installer," Matthew Dawkins wrote in the official announcement.

"Our work for the past 5 months has been concentrated on making branding easier, adding functionality to the unity-installer to allow installation of a livecd with a command line interface, the release of mklivecd 0.8.0," he added.

Highlights of Unity Linux 2010.02:

· Linux kernel 2.6.35.7; · XFCE 4.6.2, · KDE 4.5.1 - KDE 4.5.3 is also available, optionally; · Gnome 2.32.0; · Openbox 3.4.11.2; · E17 0.16.999.52995; · Updates to the toolchain, openssl, xorg, python, mono, smart, drak tools; · Updated proprietary Nvidia and ATI drivers.

A lot of work has been done on the mklivecd tool. The tool is core to Unity Linux as it enables users to customize and remaster their live CDs. The latest version adds optional support for Plymouth and an option to disable splash.

It also enables users to remaster their installed or live environment and create an ISO from them, or even built an ISO from the packages they select. Finally, they can create bootable live USB builds from ISOs or LiveCDs.

About Unity Linux

Unity Linux is a community-oriented and minimalist Live CD Linux distribution based on Mandriva Linux. Unity Linux aims to provide a core for other 'branches' to be built. It's not intended for casual users, but downloading and installing it is not particularly more complicated than other Linux distributions.
