Unity Technologies has officially announced that their Unity development toolkit has managed to get more than 1 million registered developers, accelerating its growth rate during the last few months.

250,000 developers have signed in since the end of 2011 and the company says that the pace of adoption is actually increasing after the 1 million mark was passed.

300,000 of the registered Unity developers use the toolkit each month and the parent company says that it will be working hard in the coming months in order to expand its presence across areas like Latin America, Easter Europe and Asia.

Unity is important because it allows smaller video game development teams to create their products using a number of standardized tools. This means they have more time to focus on writing and on gameplay mechanics rather than simply creating the underlying structure of their title.

A number of free-to-play MMO titles use the Unity game engine.
