Users will be able to boot in a separate session featuring the two technologies

The next iteration of Ubuntu, 13.10, will be a very interesting release because it will integrate two display servers and two versions of Unity.

With latest Ubuntu Developer Summit now over, the road to Ubuntu 13.10 seems a little bit clearer. Among the numerous changes announced or proposed, (Chromium instead of Firefox, for example), another one has caught the attention of the community.

The developers will try to offer, in Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander), an alternative session running Mir and Unity 8. Both technologies are still too young to replace the X Serve rand Unity 7, but they should be the default choice in Ubuntu 14.04.

“As part of the convergence story, Unity 8 running on Mir needs to be made available as an alternative session on the desktop as soon as practical,” reads the UDS session summary.

Even if some members of the Ubuntu community are not fans of Mir, or even Unity for that matter, it seems that these technologies are here to stay.
