Well, according to Michael Larabel from Phoronix, it looks like Canonical decided to abandon the Unity 2D project and make a single, stronger and smarter Unity interface for the Ubuntu operating system.

Starting with Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), which will be released on October 18th, 2012, Canonical plans to remove the 2D variant (the Qt non-accelerated version) of the Unity interface, leaving only the 3D one.

The reason behind this decision is probably the too much work involved in the main Unity version, and maintaining a "clone" requires even more man power.

Ubuntu Developer Summit for Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), the upcoming version of the popular Ubuntu operating system, is taking place these days in Oakland, USA, between 7 and 11 May.

I love UNITY-3D. Also, I never felt the need to use unity-2D. So, I don't mind. However, I wonder this may again cause ripples in the Ubuntu community.

It will be better if they replace UNITY-2D with MATE or similar (But I know Shuttleworth will do that).

I know something else Canonical should remove too, it is the "blur" effect in the "dash", because it steal computer resources like crazy. I installed "MyUnity" on my computer and click "dash" then "off" and my computer was, if not 2x faster, possible 10 times faster :-)

Ubuntu should maintain a lighter version because even in 1st gen core i3 laptops Unity-3D doesn't play that much well. And for serious users, developers, full time linux users and so on it's preferable to have a lighter version. Ok, that's my opinion.

I don't like Unity, period. I switched to Linux Mint with MATE.

I don't think it'd be a wise decision. Ubuntu can be run on many low configured machine till the latest release of 12.04. But if Unity-2D would not be available many machine cannot survive for Ubuntu.

Unity is a pretty awful interface decision all round. I tried it and totally hated it - why should I re-learn the interface. The best thing you can do is get rid of Unity and go back to Gnome. Unit is Windows 8 fur Linux users.
