Face Detection, geofencing indicator, address bar tweak in Safari

Apple has added a number of undocumented features in iOS 5.1, including Face Detection for up to ten faces, a “geofencing” indicator, and a subtle change in Safari’s address bar.

It is unclear why Apple failed to document this rather important feature, but Face Detection is now a part of the Camera application in iOS 5. It supports up to 10 faces, and it helps you group photos based on the people that appear in them.

Next up, iOS 5.1 gains a new location services icon. An “outlined” location services icon appears next to an item that is using what Apple refers to as a “geofence.”

The iOS settings pane explains that “A geofence is a virtual perimeter around a location. Apps like Reminders use geofencing to notify you when you arrive at, or leave, these locations.”

Finally, Safari now opens up to an empty address bar that says “go to this address.”
