Better graphics and performance

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves from Naughty Dog and Sony has managed to top the NPD Group chart for the month of October, beating out other titles that were also released for the Xbox 360 or for the Nintendo Wii.

The game has been praised, with the Softpedia review not being an exception, for the quality of its graphics, which seem to set a new standard on the PlayStation 3 and challenge the performance shown by Gears of War 2 on the Xbox 360.

The Japanese company is hoping that the tech created for the title will help other developers for the Sony platform design better gaming experiences.

Neil Druckmann, who is the lead designer and writer on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, told Gamasutra that “We have an in-house team that actually develops tools for other first parties and even for third parties. So hopefully, you're going to start seeing that shift, where more and more games that aren't even Sony first-party games get similar results to what we have, hopefully. I'd like to play more games that look like [that].”

The first iteration in the Uncharted series was also praised for its looks and Druckmann is saying that the jump in quality to the second is due to a complete restructuring of the graphical engine, which makes the GPU work less and spreads the load to the SPU's of the PlayStation 3. The console's processing units are used 100%.

With Naughty Dog ready to share its work with other studios that are developing games for the PlayStation 3, they could create an out of the box graphics engine which can be used as the Unreal 3 engine is on the Xbox 360 and on the PC, leading to better quality titles on the Sony made platform.
