The market seems to be plagued by nasty bipolar swings

Even though it has barely been more than a week since rumors said ultrabook prices were going down, a new one has sprouted that says the situation is not so optimistic.

The last time Digitimes reported about ultrabooks, it said that current ones were dropping in price and that the $700 / 534 Euro mark would become standard this year.

Now, it is in the rather strange position where it has to deny its own rumor, saying that, according to new info, the price cuts won't come as quickly as originally hoped.

The production costs of computers are still too high, and solid state drives are particularly nasty about manufacturing expenses, sources say.

As such, even if some models do get cheaper, they will be sold for around $799 / 610.20 Euro. Only in 2013 will the so-called “sweet spot” be finally attained.

One thing is for sure: Europeans will have even more reason than they do now to shun ultrabooks in favor of 15-inch and larger notebooks.
