For this new product, Samsung has applied its proprietary amorphous silicon gate technology, enabling the gate driver IC to be fabricated directly on the glass substrate, with the timing controller integrated within the driver IC. An on-board digital chip eliminates the need for mobile developers to design their own circuits.

The overall circuit footprint and component count have been reduced to about 1/3 of a conventional seven-inch LCD, inviting widespread adoption of the new seven-inch LCD in slimmer, more efficient system designs. The design, which is an inch smaller than others on the market, does not need a separate printed circuit board for timing controls and power components. This has limited the design of slim portable electronics. The new high-resolution display will be used in handsets for digital multimedia broadcasting, portable multimedia, DVD players and satellite navigation systems.

"The technology means punters can develop portable electronic devices with higher resolution and wide aspect ratio mobile displays", said Yun Jin-hyuk, Samsung Electronics Executive VP and chief of the Mobile Display Business Team. The futuristic product uses a pair of high-end plastics (which are not brittle and also thinner than conventional glasses) as plates to sandwich liquid crystal for the display.

In another statement, the company officials also said "the plastic LCD module is designed to maintains its thickness uniformly even when it bends as well as enabling higher-definition quality than the firm's five-inch products, the biggest one up until now" and that "on the back of its various strengths, plastic LCD would open up new possibilities for wearable displays or fashionable displays in the not-so-distant future."
