Electronic Arts is well known for claiming to be console neutral, which means that it will aim to bring its most important releases on all the current gaming platforms, the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC, with the Wii being targeted when the game suits the audience of that console. Red Alert 3 was supposed to be quickly arriving to the PlayStation 3 once it was released on the other platforms but at one point last year, Electronic Arts said that it was putting development on hold and we haven’t heard about it since then.
Now, the PS3 version of
Red Alert 3 is back with a vengeance. The publisher has not re-branded it, calling it the Ultimate version, and says that it will arrive loaded with content not available in any other version. Electronic Arts is trying really hard to push the new stuff by saying that players will get “Bloopers & Outtakes, Behind the Scenes, developer strategy videos, and new battleground maps not found anywhere else. Enjoy your favourite songs from the soundtrack and study tactics with the Unit Profiles video encyclopaedia. Watch the women of RA3 heat up the camera in the 'Girls of RA3' featurette -all presented in HD Blu-ray with enhanced visuals, and only for the PS3!”
There's a lot of skepticism related to real time strategy games on consoles and the Xbox 360 version of Red Alert 3 didn't do that great, despite the hype surrounding it. It will be interesting to see whether PlayStation 3 gamers will be swayed by a lot of media and some HD videos.
Meanwhile, an expansion is in the works for the PC version of the game. It is called
Uprising and will be standalone, while offering four mini campaigns that will continue the single player story where the original game left it.
