Ultimate Linux Mint 1.4, a Linux distribution based on Linux Mint 17 Qiana Cinnamon Edition 64-bit, has been released and is available for download.

Linux Mint is a distribution based on Ubuntu and it's one of the most used Linux operating systems right now. There aren't many distros out there based on it, but Ultimate Linux Mint actually manages to be better than the original, in some ways at least. It feels like a fresh experience, but it doesn't shed all the influences from its base.

It's hard to imagine that Linux Mint can be drastically improved, but it looks like the developer of Ultimate Linux Mint 1.4 did it. The changes are not huge, but the subtle modifications to the theme, the launcher, and the software selection really make a difference that's hard to ignore.

"Purpose of this edition is to work as a Live operating sistem, and have all software packages already preinstalled and ready for use straight out-of-box. You can carry it on a USB flash drive and use it on every computer. If you want- you can even install it on your hard drive, and all preinstalled software packages from Live edition will be transfered on your hard drive too."

"This edition is built for personal purposes but it can be used on every PC or laptop with 64-bit CPU (work on 32-bit edition is in progress). System itself and all preinstalled software are on their default settings (you can customize it later). This is an unofficial release and not part of official Linux Mint project," said the developer on his website.

Ultimate Linux Mint 1.4 comes with an interesting software selection by default, which is somewhat different from what you would expect. The developers also added a lot of applications that are not in the Linux Mint base and that otherwise would have been available only in the repositories. This also accounts for the large size of the distro, which is a little over 2.5 GB.

According to the developer, TOR Browser has been added by default (Chromium and Opera are also available), Wine and Playonlinux are both present, the XBMC home media theater is installed by default, and the SMPlayer is the default video player. All-in-all, there are over 50 different applications in the installation image and they cover most of any user’s needs. Anything else that you might want is covered by the repositories.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download Ultimate Linux Mint 1.4 right now from Softpedia.
