It seems that Ubuntu for Android doesn't have a future with Canonical

Ubuntu for Android, the pet project of Canonical that was supposed to ship about two years ago, is scheduled to be retired, sometime soon.

Ubuntu for Android sounds like a great idea. According to the official website, Ubuntu for Android provides a full desktop experience, including office software, web browsing, email and media applications, on Android phones docked to a screen and keyboard.

Canonical didn't put too much effort in this project after it was officially announced and besides a vague late 2012 launch date, there is not much information about it. Users don't even have access to a Beta and they can't really test it.

According to an entry in Launchpad, it seems that the project will be abandoned soon. Matthew Paul Thomas, an interface designer for Canonical, pointed out the the information on the official website about Ubuntu for Android is outdated.

Canonical's Anthony Dillon (front end web developer) asked around to check if the company is still interested in the project, and Peter Mahnke, the Web Lead at Canonical confirmed that it will get retired.

It's unclear what will happen with the project. It's possible that the developers might get a change of heart or maybe the project will be merged in Ubuntu, in some way. Until then, it seems that Ubuntu for Android will be no more.
