The Ubuntu operating system has won the Operating System of the year award from W3tech, for the third time in a row.

Canonical is taking great pride in its operating system, Ubuntu. Even if the desktop version is no longer the company’s focus, at least until its convergence dream is complete, this is still its best-known product.

“In fact, over the last three years only two Linux operating systems showed any growth at all – Debian and Ubuntu, although Gentoo had some traction in 2013.”

“As observers of the industry will know, tech used in Silicon Valley startups quickly filters through to more traditional Enterprises. With the launch of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in April, Ubuntu is set for continued greatness this year as more and more businesses seek the agility and innovation shown by many of the hot tech properties,” reads the announcement on Canonical's website.

Canonical has a full year ahead of itself. It plans to bring a new LTS release in April, and it's very likely that Ubuntu Touch-powered phones will become available this year in various shops around the world.
