For 6.06 LTS, 6.10 and 7.04 Ubuntu distributions!

Last week was a busy one for the Ubuntu team: the Tribe 6 milestone, a Ubuntu get-together, new updates, security fixes and more.

As you've probably noticed, Tribe 6 has not been released on September 6th as it was initially set and it will never be released, because the team has decided to use this alpha release as a milestone for bugfixes, after discussions with the QA, GNOME and other teams. So you should now expect the Beta release somewhere at the end of this month.

The German Discounter Plus will offer from now on Office-PCs with Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed in a few of their stores. The formerly Microsoft-oriented company Mindbridge, will save from now on a lot of money, because of their migration to Linux. They made this choice because Linux was inexpensive and they didn't have to extra-charge their customers.

Although many persons expected the ATI fglrx 8.41 driver to be a part of the Ubuntu 7.10 package set, it will not be available until the 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support) Ubuntu release (codename Hardy Heron), in April 2008. Don't worry, Canonical will try to make the fglrx driver available as an update for the Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn and Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. Or you can build the Ubuntu packages from ATI's official Linux installer, if you like.

In other news, Microwulf is a tiny PC that runs Ubuntu. Why? Because in January 2007, two team members decided to build a personal and portable Beowulf cluster with a low budget of only $2500, and they thought it was the best choice at that time. At first, they used Gentoo but it was really hard to administrate, and the developers decided to switch to the latest stable version of Ubuntu, which at that time was Ubuntu 6.10 (codename Edgy Eft). The only thing that created some problems was the absence of the on-board NIC in the Linux kernel until it was released in the 2.6.18 version.

In the end, here are some few package and security updates available for 6.06, 6.10 and 7.04 Ubuntu releases. Here are the security updates for all the Ubuntu releases previously mentioned:

■ USN-511-1 Kerberos vulnerability ■ USN-511-2 Kerberos vulnerability

Ubuntu is making a great effort to fix all the bugs and come with some new updates soon. Until next time, have a wonderful week with Ubuntu.
