Wonderful news this week, as
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) Alpha 4 brought some of the coolest and most popular applications and technologies. For example: Transmission is now the default BitTorrent client instead of that old and ugly GNOME BitTorrent downloader, Brasero will be in charge of the CD/DVD burning process from now on instead of that featureless default GNOME CD writer, GVFS will display the amount of data transferred, remaining time and actual data transfer rate, functions that were missing from Nautilus' file transfer window, KVM, ufw, improved GNOME System Monitor and many more. Take a look
here for a detailed overview at Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Alpha 4!
On Wednesday, a new Ubuntu-based distribution was released into the wild and it's called
CrunchBang. What makes CrunchBang special? And why should you use it? Take a look at our first look

On Thursday,
the French paramilitary police announced that they would migrate 70,000 computers to Ubuntu OS. The shift will be done
progressively. The "Gendarmerie Nationale" is not the first administration in France that shifted to open source operating systems. The National Assembly was the first one that adopted Ubuntu for its 1,200 PCs last year. Although, the gendarmerie is the biggest administration, with more than 100,000 employees.
