WEEKLY ROUNDUP

Ubuntu Weekly Report: 17th - 23rd February, 2008

- Introducing the Intrepid Ibex, Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 5, new updates and more....

By: Marius Nestor, Linux Editor

Great... No! Wonderful news this week, folks, as Mark Shuttleworth announced the name and the goals for the next version of Ubuntu: Intrepid Ibex a.k.a. Ubuntu 8.10, scheduled for release in October 2008. For the Intrepid Ibex, the development team will prepare an unbelievable desktop, with an amazing performance, that will work on mostly any computer (be it a high-end workstation or an old and dusty Pentium III machine) and the ability to stay connected to the Internet 24/7!

Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha 5 was released two days
ago. It comes with new applications, such as the popular Transmission (as the default BitTorrent client), the awesome Brasero (as the default CD/DVD burning tool), a brand new firewall, the latest and greatest 2.6.24.2 Linux kernel and many many more.

Starting March 2008, Obsidian will provide Ubuntu training in South Africa for the "Ubuntu Certified Professional" programme. These courses will help system administrators to pass the required Linux Professional Institute (LPI) 101 and 102 exams.

Dell will ship the Inspiron 1525n to its customers in Canada and Latin America. The computer will be powered by Ubuntu 7.10 and it will feature DVD playback capability, just like the models announced in the United States, UK, Spain and Germany.

Kubuntu offers KDE 3.5.9 packages for those of you who still use the 3.5 version of the popular K Destkop Environment. KDE 3.5.9 brings bugfixes to applications such as KMail, KOrganizer, KAlarm and even KAddressbook.

In other great news, Launchpad 1.2.2 was released and it includes the following new features and improvements:

• Karma fiends take note: registering branches and linking branches to bugs or blueprints now earn you karma! Want to know more about karma?
• Faster PPA builds: we've cut the time it takes to build packages in PPAs. The moment you upload your source, Launchpad starts building.
• More bug notifications: now you can subscribe to get bug mail about any milestone, project, package or distribution.
• Savannah bug watches: keep an eye on bugs tracked at savannah.gnu.org and savannah.nognu.org
• Improved branch registration page: it's now easier to register a branch in Launchpad.
