Ubuntu Weekly Report: 13th - 19th January

- Prince of Persia and KDE 4 on Ubuntu 7.10, how to become an Ubuntu Jedi Master and more...

By: Marius Nestor, Linux Editor

We start this week's newsletter by letting you know that anyone can now become an Ubuntu Jedi Master if you use the latest Desktop Course released by Canonical! The course has a modular form and it should take two days to complete all the ten lessons. The course comes in two different versions, a student guide and an instructor guide, both downloadable as PDF files. With the help of the new Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Course, you will be working with Canonical's distribution in no time!

On Tuesday, we released a guide that will help you learn how to install the latest
and final release of KDE 4.0 on Ubuntu Gutsy. Among the innovations brought by KDE, we can notice Plasma, the brand new desktop shell and panel, which is an amazing piece of technology that makes your KDE experience better than ever; the new and improved window manager, KWin, which now comes with Solid (a sophisticated hardware API), Phonon (a multimedia framework) and with some amazing desktop effects; Konqueror, the integrated web browser and file manager; Oxygen, a very beautiful icon theme!

On Wednesday, the Xorg package was broken and it will kinda mess up your Ubuntu OS. Software such as Filezilla, VLC or Azureus (and any other Java, WxWidgets and WxPython based applications) stopped working and they output the following error: "The program '*****' received an X Window System error.". A bug report with a temporarily solution is available at Launchpad. However, this problem is fixed now and you can safely update your Ubuntu OS!

On Friday, we released another "gamer's guide". This time is about how to install and play Prince of Persia on Ubuntu 7.10. Prince of Persia is definitely one of my all-time favorite games. It's a third-person action adventure video game published by Ubisoft. The Prince of Persia trilogy is composed of the following: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.
