Ubuntu developers are preparing to release a new update for the Ubuntu Touch platform, but they are also thinking about the update that will come after this one, and it looks like full shell rotation is finally coming.

Some of the Ubuntu Touch users might have noticed that full shell rotation is not one of the features, but it looks that it was high enough on the list of requests to finally get some attention from the developers. Before you get too excited, you need to know that the new update is scheduled to arrive next week and the one after that might take about a month, which fits with the overall schedule.

Canonical plans to have a major new update released each month, which would make Ubuntu a one-of-a-kind operating system. Most other competitors, like Apple, Microsoft, and Google, aim to release big updates at large intervals or time. They are following the old way of doing updates, but Canonical is working more with a rolling release model. The developers won't wait for months on end to make a change that could be implemented tomorrow, and what they've done until now proves that they will stick with this plan.

Full shell rotation is important

Making the operating system work in landscape is not as easy as you might think, and it took a while until both Mir and Unity 8 were able to tackle this problem, but that shouldn't be a problem anymore. Users will have to wait a few weeks, but it's finally arriving.

"For the next release we already have some interesting fixes pilled up. The overlay just landed syncs of the dialer, address-book and messaging in preparation for the big full shell rotation landing. In the meantime, we had a new reminders-app and music-app released to the store as well. Let's see how things go from now on," said Canonical's Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak.
