The first Vivid-based update for Ubuntu phones

Last week, we reported on the new features that would arrive in the next major OTA (Over the Air) software update for the Canonical's Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system for Ubuntu phones.

At that point in time, we told you that the OTA-4 update would arrive on your Ubuntu phones by the end of May or perhaps at the beginning of June. Unfortunately, the Ubuntu Touch team is still working on patching the last remaining bugs, so they've postponed the update for the week of June 8, but most probably, you will be able to update sometime at the end of next week if everything goes according to plan.

"We can now approximate the OTA-4 release date to somewhere mid next week. This update will have a lot of goodies in it as it will be the first vivid-overlay based update - and remember that for the last few weeks all new fixes were landing to this target," says Łukasz Zemczak, on behalf of the Foundations Team.

The first OTA update based on Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet)

The good news, however, is that OTA-4 is the first update to upgrade the base of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system from Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) to Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet). Also, after the release of the OTA-4 update, the team will concentrate their efforts on implementing new icons for the core apps of Ubuntu Touch.

In similar news, we reported the other day about the next set of features that would be implemented in the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system in the coming months, and now that we will have two more Ubuntu phones, that is, the BQ Aquaris E5 HD and Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, more awesome updates, as well as attractive new features and applications will arrive in Ubuntu for phones.
