Canonical has finally made the switch to the Mir display server

Ubuntu Touch has just switched to Mir and it's now well on its way towards a stable release on October 17, along with Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander).

Canonical promised to ship Mir as default on both Ubuntu Touch and Ubuntu desktop by the time of the 13.10 release. As we all know, the Ubuntu desktop will not feature Mir, but Ubuntu Touch has just received an update that enables the new display server instead of SurfaceFlinger, which was borrowed from Android.

“So image #88 and #89 came out and Mir is the default! We've also got Mir support for Nexus 7 (grouper) and some address book fixes in #89. We've spent Wednesday fixing Mir related issues or regressions and tonight we're landing a crazy number of bug fixes in mir itself and in unity-mir,” stated Canonical's Loïc Minier.

Mir is still riddled with bugs, so, for the time being, you should leave it to the developers to worry about it and wait a few more days before installing the new phone OS, especially because the next on the list is Unity 8, which will change the way the interface looks and behaves.
