14 DAY TRIAL // The stable branch of the Ubuntu Touch operating system is currently based on Ubuntu 14.10, but it's about to move to Ubuntu 15.04. That means the development version of the mobile operating system is about to switch to Ubuntu 15.10.
Canonical just released a new update for Ubuntu Touch, which has been pushed out the door under the name OTA 3.5. It's the last update for the Ubuntu Touch version based on the Utopic Unicorn branch. The major new update for this operating system should move everyone to a new base, Vivid. The mobile platform doesn't use the same kind of release schedule as the regular Ubuntu flavor, so the developers have a little bit more freedom to choose.
The move itself to a new base won't be immediately visible to the users. The interface, features, options, and apps won't be affected by the switch, but the developers need to upgrade the platform. This is done at approximately six months intervals, which is not all that surprising. Moving to another Ubuntu version also allows devs to implement easily new features and to make bigger upgrades.
Ubuntu Touch devel will soon move on Wily Werewolf
It took the Ubuntu devs a while, but they have finally announced that they are going to move the development version to the new game in town, Wily Werewolf, the latest version that was just started.
"We're also using the time to tweak our processes accordingly to the current challenges. At first management wasn't completely clear on how they would like development to proceed, but it seems all the confusion is slowly disappearing. It seems we'll be using the same landing processes as we did before - with wily becoming our new devel series and vivid+overlay becoming the new stable (after OTA-4). So no changes here. We apologize for the earlier confusion, but there was no clear guidance at the beginning of this cycle," wrote Canonical's Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak.
Even if a devel base has been chosen, things are not going to move all that fast. The first working version based on Wily Werewolf won't land anytime soon, at least not before an Ubuntu Touch based on Vivid becomes stable.
