Ubuntu Studio, a multimedia editing / creation flavor of Ubuntu, has reached version 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and is now ready for download.

Ubuntu Studio 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) has been released along with all the other flavors, like Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu GNOME, and it's sharing some of their features.

The distribution is based on the latest Xfce 4.10 desktop, which means that it brings some of the features that you might expect from Xubuntu, for example.

“Ubuntu Studio is the most widely used multimedia orientated GNU/Linux distribution in the world. It comes preinstalled with a selection of the most common free multimedia applications available, and is configured for best performance for the Ubuntu Studio defined workflows: Audio, Graphics, Video, Photography and Publishing,” reads the official website.

The Audio section of the distribution comes with a low latency capable audio and midi server called Jack, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) app called Ardour, a few sequencers and synthesizers, guitar amp simulators (Rakarrack and Guitarix), and audio programming environments.

The Graphics section features the Blender 3D content creation suite, InkScape vector graphics editor, GIMP, and a digital painting tool called MyPaint.

Video also sports a few important applications such as Openshot (a simple video editor), the multimedia framework FFMpeg, and DVDStyler, one of the few apps that can be used to created DVDs.

Photography is a big part of the distribution and comes with a photography workflow application and RAW developer software called Darktable and Shotwell (library organizer).

The last category, Publishing, features Calibre, the famous eBook reader and editor, Scribu, an application that allows users to create professional PDF publications and, of course, LibreOffice.

Ubuntu Studio 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) does feature some very important changes and upgrades. For example, the new installer ubiquity plugin, which allows users to select packages to install from the developer's workflow of audio, video, graphics, photography, and publishing metas, has been added, and linux-lowlatency has been merged with linux-generic master branch, which means the two are almost identical.

Also, gtk3 indicator support has been added in the panel, IBus has been dropped, and Speech-dispatcher and espeak have been added, in addition to Orca and brltty.

The Ubuntu Studio 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) will be supported for the next three years, which is well beyond the date for the next LTS.
