Ubuntu Privacy Remix 10.04r1 has been released, the first stable version of the Ubuntu-based distro. Ubuntu Privacy Remix (UPR) is a specialized Linux distribution for handling highly sensitive data. The latest release comes with several updated packages as well as some custom software.

"After a long period of work and testing, the UPR team has released the final version of Ubuntu Privacy Remix 10.04 (Codename Locked Lynx)," Andreas Heinlein wrote in the official announcement.

"And yes, we know Ubuntu 10.10 has just been released. But we believe stability is more important for UPR, so we are focusing on LTS releases whenever possible," he explained.

TrueCrypt, arguably the most important application in Ubuntu Privacy Remix, has been updated to TrueCrypt 6.3a. While TrueCrypt 7.0 is available, several changes in the latest version of the encryption software have made the developers hold back on upgrading.

Specifically, the team found no documentation on some of the changes to the container format so it will not be deployed until a full review has been completed.

"We have written our own frontend to GnuPG, which replaces seahorse. With it, you can use GPG features like key groups or restoring original filenames. Use it like the seahorse plugins from the context menu (Encrypt, Sign)," the developers explained.

Ubuntu Privacy Remix 10.04r1 is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as the team wanted to stick with more stable releases. It also comes with Linux kernel 2.6.32.23. Hardware requirements should be the same as before.

About Ubuntu Privacy Remix

UPR is designed to run from a live environment and can't be installed to a hard drive. It also comes with no networking components. The idea is to create a safe environment to handle encrypted volumes.
