It appears that Aliexpress is selling a small ARM-based device that runs Android 2.3, but can be easily hacked to run the popular Ubuntu operating system. Mele A1000 is actually sold as a TV box for $70. It is powered by an ARM-based Allwinner A10 chip. It features 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 ARM CPU with a MALI400MP OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU, HDMI, CVBS, and VGA video ouput, R+L, SPDIF audio output, USB port, SD Card slot, eSATA (external SATA) port, and Ethernet port.
As you can see from the video above, it appears that someone (
ZeNiTRaM) already tested the device with the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) operating system, booted straight from the SD card.
Barry Kauler, the father of the Puppy Linux distribution, made a request on the arm-netbook mailinglist asking for the SD card image of the Ubuntu OS demoed in the video above.
