Ubuntu Multimedia Center is a complete Linux-based operating system based of course on the most popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu. Ubuntu Multimedia Center is freely available with community and professional support.

The Ubuntu Multimedia Center Team warns the users that live in countries that don't allow the use of mp3 playback or DVD playback to remain using the regular release of Ubuntu.

For now, Ubuntu Multimedia Center is in development stage and there is a lot of work to be done until he becomes a stable distribution. The developer of Ubuntu Multimedia Center, Zach Thibeau, wants you to also participate in the evolution of this distribution. It seams that this first version of Ubuntu Multimedia Center is based on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with GNOME 2.14.3 as default desktop environment.

Let's have a look at some of the installed software:

■ Alacarte Menu Editor ■ The GIMP Image Editor ■ gThumb Image Viewer ■ XSane Image Scanner ■ aMSN Instant Messenger ■ Mozilla Firefox Web Browser ■ Gaim Instant Messenger ■ AbiWord Word Processor ■ Totem Movie Player ■ Ogle DVD Player ■ Rhythmbox Music Player ■ Serpentine Audio CD Creator ■ Sound Juicer CD Extractor ■ VLC Media Player ■ Synaptic Package Manager ■ ...and a lot of GNOME games like: Ataxx, Klotski, Mahjongg, Mines, Nibbles, Tali, etc.

Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, based on the Debian Linux and it's freely available with both community and professional support.

The Ubuntu Philosophy: software should be available free of charge, software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. The freedoms built around this operating system make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.

As all other Ubuntu based distributions, Ubuntu Multimedia Center can also be installed on your hard drive, with the help of the classical Ubuntu installation wizard.
