Users can install the new theme with great ease

The Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS distro was released a few weeks ago and it was received with great interest by the community. Now, a new theme has been made available for the Linux distribution and it could be the best one made so far for this OS.

Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS has recently been released and it incorporates a number default themes that are not actually bad. On the other hand, some users have complained about the simplicity and the design of the regular themes. They are not all that exciting and something a little more different was needed. This is where the new Yuyo theme comes into play.

A theme might not seem like much, but if it's really well done, then it has the potential to really change the entire feel of the desktop. Ubuntu MATE borrows the design of theme from the base system, which is Ubuntu.

So, if you've seen Ubuntu, then you won't find Ubuntu MATE all that alien. Some users might enjoy a nice change of scenery and they don't need to install new themes from third-party sources, not that Yuyo has been made available.

From concept to reality in just a couple of weeks

The first images with the theme were posted a short while ago, and most Ubuntu MATE users really like it. This new theme is being designed by Sam Hewitt, who you might know as the guy who makes the famous Moka theme, so it's in really good hands. It took him a while to finish something tangible and ready for testing, and it was added to the official Ubuntu MATE repos.

Installing the new themes is quite easy and users just need to open a terminal and enter the following commands (root is needed):

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install yuyo-gtk-theme
After the packages have been downloaded, you just open Preferences and Appearance and select one of the Yuyo entries. The leader of the Ubuntu MATE project, Martin Wimpress, was kind enough to share this piece of information with the rest of us.

If you haven't tried Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS, this is a very good time to do it. The system is very stable and it provides a desktop that’s somewhat reminiscent of the old GNOME2, while it still provides a modern approach. You can download Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS from Softpedia. It's also a Live CD, so it's quite easy to test.
