At the request of numerous “angry” Ubuntu MATE fans, Martin Wimpress announced a few minutes ago, March 23, the immediate availability for download of the second maintenance release of the Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS (Long Term Support) operating system.

Following in the footsteps of Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Trusty Tahr), which was released a month ago, on February 20, 2015, Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS fixes several issues that were present in Ubuntu MATE 14.04.1 LTS, updates various core components, and adds some new features.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.16.0-33, Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS comes with Mozilla Firefox 36.0, LibreOffice 4.4, LightDM GTK Greeter 2.0.0, LightDM GTK Greeter Settings 1.10, as well as many backported apps from Ubuntu MATE 15.04, including MATE Tweak, MATE Menu, GTK 2.24.27, as well as the cloudtop meta package.

Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 includes all MATE package updates from Debian 8.0 Jessie

Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS also includes a full MATE desktop environment from the upstream Debian 8.0 (Jessie) operating system, which has also been synced with Ubuntu MATE 14.10. In addition, the Ubiquity and Compiz compatibility features for MATE have been backported from Ubuntu MATE 15.04.

Among other changes implemented in Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS, we can mention that the sound themes have been fixed, the X zapping via the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace keyboard shortcut has been enabled, touch to click has been enabled by default for touchpads, and Qt accessibility modules will now be activated once a MATE session is detected.

As usual, you can download Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 LTS right now via Softpedia or directly from the official announcement, where you can find more details about the under-the-hood improvements implemented in this release of Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS.
