After Dell, Intel also goes open source

The Ubuntu distribution of Linux from Canonical has managed to kick Windows Vista clear off of Intel. After Dell, the world's largest CPU maker is getting ready to embrace Ubuntu Linux while turning away from traditional partner Microsoft and the Windows operating system. The Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco was the stage where the processor developer showcased its latest lineup of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs). However Microsoft is nowhere near center stage, as Intel apparently got in bed with both Canonical, distributors of Ubuntu Linux, and Apple. This is of course a love triangle that cannot have under any circumstances Microsoft in the mix.

While Intel and Microsoft do in fact have a long standing tradition of collaborating, the Redmond company will barely be associated with anything with an Apple logo on it, while Ubuntu Linux, especially after the stunt Dell pulled by offering it alongside Vista, is a direct competitor and has also the "handicap" of being open source, in Microsoft's perspective of course. Still, for its development direction with Mobile Internet Devices, while elbowing Microsoft to the background, Intel borrowed Apple's iPhone design. Just access the image at the bottom in order to make an idea of what the next generation of Intel MIDs will offer in terms of style.

The influences of the iPhone design are obvious, including the backbone visuals provided by the touchscreen. Anand Chandrasekher, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Ultra Mobility Group presented the MID, while hinting that Intel and Apple could meet in the future in terms of innovation. Additionally, Intel is also flirting with Canonical for the operating system that will power the MID. Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth highlighted the benefits that Ubuntu on MIDs will bring to developers. At this point Intel has not officially confirmed that Microsoft's Windows Vista or Windows CE are out of the picture, but all the devices showcased at IDF were running Ubuntu Linux.
