14 DAY TRIAL // Ubuntu Kylin 14.04.2 LTS, the Chinese Linux distribution developed in collaboration with Canonical, has been released and is now available for download.
Ubuntu Kylin is one of the latest additions to the Ubuntu family and it's developed specifically for the Chinese market. That means that it's not only an Ubuntu repackaged with the proper language support but it's actually made to fit that culture and need. It comes prepared with a ton of specific applications and it's primarily built by Chinese developers. In fact, it's a collaboration between China Software and Integrated Chip Promotions Centre (CSIP), National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), and Canonical.
The Chinese government has been looking for some time to manage its dependency on Windows systems, but they haven't decided on what to use. They actually tried to build their own distro but they didn't manage to get it off the ground. There are a few other options rising out of China, like Deeping Linux or Ubuntu Kylin, so the battle is quite fierce.
Ubuntu Kylin 14.04.2 LTS is a maintenance update
Just like all the other Ubuntu flavors, this latest version doesn't have anything extra. There are no new features and it only integrates all the updates and fixes made so far, along with a new Linux kernel.
"By default, the 14.04.2 point release will ship with a newer 3.16 Linux kernel from Ubuntu 14.10, and a matching X.org stack. This is based on the 3.16.0 Extended Upstream Stable Kernel Release. The purpose of providing a newer kernel in the 14.04.2 point release is for hardware enablement," wrote the Ubuntu developers.
If you already have Ubuntu Kylin installed, you don't really have to do anything extra, just to upgrade your system on a regular basis. This is basically a regenerated ISO with everything packed, so you don't have to installed everything from scratch.
