The Ubuntu team released today the first milestones of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu towards Ubuntu 6.10, Edgy Eft.
The kernel has been upgraded to 2.6.17 for all versions, and the GNOME desktop has been updated to 2.15.4 with GTK+ 2.10 in Ubuntu.
"This is an alpha (pre-) release. Pre-release version of Edgy are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions of Edgy ARE recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.
Edgy, all about cutting edge, perhaps bleeding edge, will consist of brand new code and infrastructure. The time has come to introduce some seriously interesting, but definately edgy, new technologies which lay the groundwork for the next wave of Ubuntu development.
Knot CD 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Edgy development cycle, as images that are known to be reasonably free of CD-build or installer bugs, while representing very current snapshots of Edgy."
What else is now in Edgy Eft?
• KDE 3.5.3
• Kernel 2.6.17.5
• K3b 0.12.16
• SpeedCrunch 0.7
• amaroK 1.4.1
I gave a test to Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Knot 1 and made some screenshots:
