"The Ubuntu team is proud to announce Ubuntu 5.10. This is the official Ubuntu 5.10 release, and includes installation CDs, live CDs, and combination DVDs for three architectures," announced Matt Zimmerman in an open e-mail to the Ubuntu community today.

"Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available from the network, a commitment to security updates for 18 months after each release and professional technical support from many companies around the world."

Built on top of the second-most popular Linux distribution, Debian, Ubuntu's latest version, named Breezy Badger, features cutting-edge software that should keep developers and end-users alike happy for the next six months.

Major features in the new version include thin client integration, OEM installer support, and Launchpad as the new infrastructure that Ubuntu and its derivatives use for translation, bug tracking, sharing code patches, fixes and technical support.

This version of Ubuntu has better mobile support, with testing having been performed on a host of recent laptops.

There are various flavours of Ubuntu Breezy available for download, depending on your needs and preferences. You can also mix-and-match versions.

The Ubuntu version ships with Gnome 2.12.1, while Kubuntu features the popular KDE desktop (version 3.4.3).

Edubuntu is specifically designed for learners in the six to 18 age category, and is customised to be installed and run by an educator with limited technical knowledge and skills. Edubuntu takes advantage of the thin client technology in Ubuntu by installing the stand-along classroom server by default. This means that a school running Edubuntu only needs one fast machine to act as a server, and can re-purpose older machines as the clients.

An Ubuntu for Servers version is expected to be released soon, and will be specifically optimised for server installs.
