The final version for the 15.04 branch of Ubuntu GNOME has been released and is now available for download. As expected, it comes with the latest GNOME 3.14 packages, a new Linux kernel, and many other upgrades.

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is based on GNOME 3.14, and that is just a fact. Each time a new Ubuntu GNOME is made available, the community comes with the same question. Why isn't the latest version of GNOME available by default?

It's a reasonable question, but it has a complicated answer. The shortest explanation is that the development cycles of GNOME and Ubuntu GNOME are pretty different, so there wasn't enough time to add and test the implementation of the latest packages.

The good news is that most of the GNOME 3.16 packages are already available, via a PPA. It's not the ideal situation, but this is a solution that should work, and it should produce some excellent results.

Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) is a solid release

Wayland is still not fully supported by GNOME, so it's not really supported by Ubuntu GNOME either. In any case, users will be able to find a different entry in the login manager for the Wayland display server.

"Ubuntu GNOME is an official flavour of Ubuntu, featuring the GNOME desktop environment. Ubuntu GNOME is a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience built from the Ubuntu repositories. Most of GNOME 3.14 is now included. The few missing bits of 3.14 are available in ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3. We do NOT use gnome-software to install applications, instead we use Ubuntu Software Center," reads the official wiki entry.

The developers also explained that gnome-maps and gnome-weather are installed by default, the GNOME Classic session is also included by default, and a few third-party themes have been added as well.

Users can download the latest Ubuntu GNOME 15.04 from Softpedia and give it a spin.
